Community Flood Resilience

At Earth Action Trust, our Community Flood Resilience programme supports people in better understanding flood risk and taking practical steps to live more safely with water.

Aligned with Auckland Council’s Making Space for Water programme, we focus on building flood awareness, preparedness, and shared responsibility at the local level. Our work helps communities understand how flooding happens, what it means for their neighbourhoods, and how everyday actions can reduce risk.

We deliver inclusive, place-based learning that connects people with their local waterways, overland flow paths, and flood-prone areas. By combining clear information, hands-on activities, and local knowledge, we support informed decision-making and help build safer, more water-sensitive neighbourhoods across Tāmaki Makaurau.

Helping Communities Prepare for Flooding

Why flood resilience matters

Flooding is a natural process, but the way we design and use our neighbourhoods affects how water moves during heavy rain. Understanding local flood risk helps communities:

  • Stay safer during extreme weather events
  • Prepare and respond with confidence
  • Reduce damage to homes, streets, and community spaces
  • Support nature-based solutions that slow, store, and safely direct water

Flood resilience is a shared responsibility between councils, communities, and individuals.

What we deliver

Our programme offers practical, engaging activities designed for different ages, cultures, and learning styles:

  • Community flood resilience workshops and pop-up events
  • Flood education sessions for children, families, and seniors
  • Interactive flood resilience treasure hunts and outdoor learning
  • Participatory mapping using local flood and overland flow information
  • Demonstrations of nature-based solutions such as rain gardens, wetlands, and healthy streams
  • Visual and hands-on tools that make flood risk easy to understand
  • Culturally responsive and inclusive learning resources

How we work

We take a community-led approach that:

  • Uses simple, visual, and accessible language
  • Values local knowledge and lived experience
  • Encourages questions, dialogue, and shared learning
  • Supports people to take practical actions at home and in their neighbourhoods

Our activities are designed to be welcoming, informative, and empowering.
