Past Programmes

From Waste Reduction Awareness and Education and zero-waste events to volunteer networks, education workshops, and recycling initiatives, Earth Action Trust has worked with communities across Auckland to reduce waste, raise awareness, and inspire sustainable living. Together, we’ve promoted cleaner streets, empowered newcomers, and created pathways for long-term environmental change.

Programmes for Community Sustainability

Street Cleanup

Trash on city streets, plastic in the sea, and illegal dumping are all part of the problem. In Auckland alone, litter cleanups cost almost $5 million a year according to the 2018 ‘Litter by Little’ project report. The’ Anti-litter Champions’ is a campaign to raise awareness of the increasing trash on city streets by:
• Engaging the community in events
• ‘Team Up 2 Clean UP‘ activities

Zero Waste Events

New Zealand is now home to more than 200 cultures, and with this diversity comes a vibrant calendar of celebrations, especially over summer. Unfortunately, the waste generated at many of these events has had harmful effects on wildlife, soil, and the wider environment.

Zero Waste @ Events is a service designed to support event managers in ensuring that waste is sorted correctly into the appropriate streams — recycling, composting, landfill, and soft plastics — so celebrations can be enjoyed without harming Papatūānuku.

Live Lightly

There is a growing demand for public events to be a zero-waste. Since 2018, we have participated in several events and festivals in Auckland to educate member of the public on sorting waste properly and increase waste diversion.

Growing Confident Communities Together

GCCT was a three‑year forum series bringing together 36 migrant, refugee, and Pacific community groups to explore local solutions to local challenges — from unemployment and youth wellbeing to social isolation, family breakdown, crime, addiction, elder abuse, and transport barriers.

Unemployment emerged as a key issue across all communities. This collective insight led to the creation of a job‑focused social enterprise, which became Earth Action Trust – Nuku Nuku a Papatūānuku.

Waste Minimisation Education Presentation and Workshop

Our waste minimisation education presentation and workshop, formerly called “SAIKI (psyche)”, aims at
changing our mind in treating waste as a resource not as a problem. Topics and activities include:
• How our lifestyles contribute to environmental problems
• The 6R concept for sustainability (refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, repair and rot)
• How to sort rubbish at home
• Waste audit at each household

Since 2013, with consideration of participants’ cultural backgrounds.

Live Lightly!! Newcomers

Live Lightly is an Auckland Council’s initiative that shows the everyday lifestyle choices we can all
make to have a healthier life with minimal material and energy consumption. Participants are
encouraged to pledge day to day actions to make a positive change and impact on the world.
Newcomers often bring their familiar habits and attitudes to the environment to New Zealand. Our
Live Lightly!! Newcomers training aims to address this gap by informing them what is expected in
the new country to be an environmentally responsible citizen. Trainees will also facilitate the same
programme to their own communities as a trainer.

From July 2017 to June 2018, Earth Action Trust operated a community recycling centre trial project (RePurpose Community Recycling Centre) in partnership with Grey Lynn 2030 Transition Community. This exercise helped us build a foundation for operating a community recycling centre or drop-off centre in the Central Auckland area in future.
